Ring dance in my back garden
Ring dance in my back garden is a large painting (200 X 200 cm) which developed from my observations, reflections and enjoyment of floral life on summer days and evenings right on my doorstep in Iceland. But there is much more than blooms in the painting for my background as a scientist has encouraged me to include features like pollen grains, and other minute parts of the flowers only visible by microscope and sometimes represented by molecular models. To me as a scientist it seems perfectly normal to include such minutae, greatly increasing the field of view and creating a complexity in the work which more closely represents nature. I am also fascinated by the symbiotic relationship of the flowers and the bees and have included in this painting a single eye of a bee. Through it we see their view of the flowers in the blue to ultraviolet range for which they are sensitive and the painting thus combies with our own view of this shared beautiful world.
